The Work of Shigeru Miyomoto

"I had to draw this character on a very small scale of 16 dots X 16 dots, so the challenge was to actually draw a human being under these conditions. So I had to do things efficiently. First, I said, we have to make his face and nose big, so people would realize that this was a person; meaning that its body would become smaller. Now to make it look as if he were running, we should make his arms move; meaning that he should be wearing something like overalls, and we should change the colors on the sleeves and the body. And then I started to think that this guy looked Italian, while all of this was going on...You need to have a moustache to make his nose visible. It is also convenient, as you don't have to draw the mouth if you draw the moustache."

"I did everything from the screen colors to the font of the numbers."

"I personally kept thinking `this is not enough, this is not enough.` The producer in charge of the development division 1 at Nintendo came up and said `it's not going to be enough if you keep on thinking just about it`, and it kind of lightened the weight off of my shoulders."

"The important protocol I learned by creating arcade games was to make games with simple rules; games that even people that are not playing it can enjoy, games that are obvious. The people playing the game should be able to make sense of the rules; why was the game over, or why a certain move was a mistake. I still put a lot of weight on making rules that are easy to understand."
